How to Prepare for a Canine Inspection

Canine bed bug inspections are one of the most effective ways to confirm an infestation. Specially trained sniffer dogs can detect living bed bugs and their eggs with remarkable precision. In fact, canine inspections are often faster and accurate than a simple visual inspection.

But in order for these doggie detectives to do their job it’s important that your home is properly prepared ahead of time. The environment must be made ready for the inspection. Here’s what you need to know about getting ready for a canine bed bug inspection in order to ensure the most accurate results.

The Importance of Preparation

Canine bed bug inspectors rely on their dog’s sense of smell to detect the unique scent of living bed bugs and their eggs. Anything that might interfere with the animal’s ability to sniff out hidden pests – such as clutter, strong odors, or limited access to areas in the search field – will reduce the accuracy of the inspection. Proper preparation makes it easier for the sniffer dogs to do their job, reducing the likelihood of false negatives and increasing the overall effectiveness of the inspection process.

What to do Before the Inspection

Prior to your scheduled inspection there are a few general bits of business that need your attention. These are just some simple but effective tips that will help prepare the search environment for a canine inspection so the dogs and their handlers can complete their task quickly and efficiently.

  • Clean – Tidying up your home or business will make the inspection process go much smoother. Remove any unnecessary clutter and vacuum thoroughly. Vacuuming should be don at least 24 hours prior to inspection.
  • Avoid Pesticides – It’s tempting to try to treat your bed bug problem with over-the-counter pesticides. But the chemicals can mask scents and prevent the sniffer dogs from doing their job. They may also harm the animal. If you have been using pesticides inform the inspection team beforehand.
  • Avoid Strong Odors – Again, you want to limit any odors that may interfere with the sniffer dog’s performance. Refrain from using air fresheners, scented candles, incense or heavily scented cleaning products for at least 24 to 48 hours prior to your scheduled inspection. These odors can overwhelm the dog’s olfactory senses.
  • Don’t Cook Immediately Before Your Inspection – The smell of cooked food (especially strong scents like bacon, garlic, or onions) can interfere with the inspection. It’s best not to cook for at least a few hours before your scheduled appointment.
  • Ventilation – Avoid running fans or air conditioners that may circulate or mask odors. If windows are usually open close them a couple of hours before the inspection begins. This will help stabilize scent conditions and make it easier for the inspector dogs sniff out the bed bugs.

Preparing Specific Areas

When preparing your home for a canine bed bug inspection there are some specific areas that will need special attention. These are common hot spots for bed bug activity. Have the areas prepped beforehand will help ensure a faster and more effective inspection.

  • Bedrooms – Bed bugs tend to stay close to where people sleep, so bedrooms will be a primary focus of most inspections. Strip sheets, blankets, and comforters off of all the beds. Remove any items that may be stored under beds unless your inspection team gives you other instructions. Make sure beds, nightstands, and other furniture are accessible from all sides.
  • Living Rooms – Living rooms and other common areas are the next focus point of the inspection. Remove any blankets or throw pillows from couches and chairs. Make sure furniture is accessible for dogs and their handlers. Remove clutter as much as possible.
  • Closets – Bed bugs are known to hide in clothing and storage boxes. Prior to inspection organize your closets so the floor is visible and accessible to the sniffer dogs. Don’t remove or bag clothing unless instructed by your inspector. Keep closet doors open for easy access.

Take Care of Your Pets

If you have pets they should be removed from the premises before the inspection. This includes dogs, cats, birds and other small animals. Their scent may distract the canine inspector or cause unnecessary stress to the animal during the inspection process. Also be sure to clean up food bowls, water bowls and litter boxes.

During the Inspection

It is important to minimize distractions while the sniffer dogs are going about their business. Try to keep your home quiet. Turn off televisions, radios, and any loud appliances.

Let the canine team go about the process without interruptions. The dogs may indicate by sitting, pawing or focusing on a specific area. Trust their handlers to interpret the behavior. Avoid interacting with the dogs unless their handler says it’s okay. Remember, they’re here to work not play.

Canine bed bug inspections offer a highly accurate, non-invasive way to detect infestations early. But their success depends in large part on your preparation. By creating a clean, accessible, and scent-neutral environment, you help the dog perform at their best—giving you peace of mind and reliable results. Whether you’re dealing with a suspected infestation or just taking preventative steps, proper preparation ensures your canine inspection is worth every penny.
