A bed bug infestation can feel overwhelming. Especially when you consider these troublesome pests may spread into your clothing, furniture, and other belongings. Your first instinct may be to start throwing everything in the trash. But take a breath and calm down. In the majority of cases your belongings can be safely rescued and restored without spreading those bed bugs throughout your home.
The key is to act with purpose. Be methodical. By carefully sorting, cleaning, and isolating your belongings you can save valuable items and regain control of your home.
Start with a Plan
The first step is to create a plan that will help you avoid any further spread of the infestation. Designate separate ‘infested’ and ‘clean’ zones in your home, and use heavy-duty plastic bags or sealed containers to transport items between areas.
Avoid carrying loose items through hallways or across rooms. Even a few stray bed bugs can a start a new infestation, so you need to be careful. Label your containers so you know which items have been treated and which need attention. To further reduce any potential transfer you may want to consider wearing disposable gloves during cleanup.
Clothing and Washable Fabrics
Heat is one of the most effective weapons against bed bugs, and with its help you should be able to save your clothing, bedding, curtains, towels and other soft fabrics.
Place washable items directly into sealed containers before transporting anything to the laundry area. If possible, everything should be washed in hot water and dried for at least so minutes on the highest recommended heat setting for the material. The sustained heat should kill any stray bed bugs as well as their eggs.
Once cleaned, place the items into fresh bags or storage bins until the infestation is fully resolved.
Furniture
Furniture doesn’t necessarily need to be discarded. Most upholstered items can be professionally treated and saved, especially if the infestation is caught early.
Start by vacuuming seams, cushions and cracks. This applies to chairs, couches, and mattresses. Don’t forget to go underneath infested pieces as well. Take your time and get into any hard to reach areas. After vacuuming, immediately empty the contents of your vacuum cleaner into a sealed trash container. Do this outside to avoid potentially spreading any stray bed bugs throughout your home.
Steam cleaning is also an effective option for upholstered furniture. The high temperatures can penetrate fabric and kill bed bugs and their eggs. However, the proper temperatures must be reached and you need to take your time throughout the process to ensure best results.
If any of your furniture is heavily infested or structurally damaged disposal may be the best option. When discarding infested furniture be sure to label it clearly so others don’t unknowingly bring it home.
Electronics
Bed bugs can, and will, get into anything and everything. That includes electronics such as alarm clocks, gaming consoles, televisions and even computers. These devices all provide warmth and shelter for bed bugs trying to maintain a low profile.
Naturally, you don’t want to spray any liquids or chemicals into any infested electronics. Instead, carefully inspect vents, and connection ports. Portable items like alarm clocks or bookshelf speakers can be sealed in airtight containers for monitoring.
If you suspect any of your electronics are harboring bed bugs consult your pest control professional before attempting any aggressive treatments. In most cases a bed bug removal team can employ specialized heating equipment to safely treat the items without causing any damage.
Reduce Clutter
Clutter gives bed bugs countless places to hide, making treatment much more difficult. One of the best ways to rescue your belongings is by organizing and simplifying your environment.
Sort items into categories:
-
Keep and treat
-
Store temporarily
-
Discard if unnecessary
Avoid moving untreated clutter into clean spaces. Use clear storage bins whenever possible so you can inspect contents easily.
The less clutter available, the easier it becomes to monitor and eliminate bed bugs successfully.
Know When to Call in the Professionals
Large infestations can not be handled alone. Professional pest control services have specialized tools, including commercial heat units and targeted insecticides, that are far more effective than DIY methods. A professional can also help you determine which of your belongings can be safely rescued and which may post continued risk.
Although a bed bug infestation is frustrating, it does not mean you must lose everything you own. With careful cleaning, isolation, and treatment, many personal belongings can be safely rescued. Staying organized, patient, and proactive gives you the best chance of restoring your home and preventing bed bugs from returning.
